Initially they were part of the then Department of Oriental Studies, which later expanded to become the Center for Oriental Languages and Cultures. Since 2000 the Arabic Studies at Sofia University became an independent Department of Arabic and Semitic Studies at which 9 full-time and 15 part-time scholars and professors give classes and lectures today. At the present time the department offers not only BA degree in Arabic Studies but also two MA programs – Arabic Language and Literature, and Arab Society and Culture. On occasion of its 30th anniversary the Department of Arabic and Semitic Studies has the pleasure to announce that it is organizing an international conference under the general theme “The Arab World and Islam – Identities and Intercultural Interactions”. We are welcoming papers from the following academic disciplines: Linguistics; Literature; History; Religious Studies; Art History; Cultural Studies and other branches of human and social sciences. The working foreign languages of the conference will be English, German, French and Arabic. Articles for the proceedings will be accepted mostly in English though some might be in German or French. The conference will be held between the 10th and the 15th of May, 2005 in Sofia. The new deadline for submission of the application forms is November 30, 2004. After this date those who are interested to participate will receive the 2nd circular letter containing information about the concrete dates, the schedule, the congress fees, venue and the accommodation facilities.
