Europe's Eastern Enlargement, Toronto, 10-11.2005 Europe's Eastern Enlargement: Security, Citizenship, and Coexistence February 10-11, 2005 Vivian and David Campbell Conference Facility Munk Centre for International Studies University of Toronto A graduate student conference organized by the Centre for Russian and East European Studies. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers The fundamental shift in Europe's political and economic landscape in May 2004 has created a series of new challenges and opportunities. The European Union (EU) is determined to enlarge even further especially in Southeastern Europe. While the EU has proved to be instrumental in democratizing the former Communist East, can it maintain the momentum without diminishing its core values? As Machiavelli wrote in The Prince, drastic change destabilizes the balance of power. Is this the current state of the EU? Has the eastward expansion destabilized the western countries and disrupted their relationship with the non-EU east? The Centre for Russian and East European Studies (CREES) at the Munk Centre for International Studies, University of Toronto, will be hosting an interdisciplinary graduate student conference concerning the future direction of policy-making and security in Europe. We invite you to submit papers dealing with any of the following broad issue areas: Civil Society and Citizenship - the flow of westerly migration, state brain-drains, transnational social capital, and increased nationalist sentiments in a supra-national arena. Political and Economic Security - the evolution of a common foreign and security policy, internal and external Schengen issues, Acquis Communautaire, inexpensive foreign labour competition, further enlargement, foreign investment. Minorities and Diversity - ethnic pluralism, gender, nationalist and ultra right-wing political parties, language. Submissions The conference is open to graduate students.
