Bologna Seminar on Doctoral Programmes The "Bologna Seminar" on Doctoral Programmes will be held in Salzburg (Austria), from 3rd to 5th february 2005. The organisation is jointly performed by the Austrian Ministry of Education, the Germany Ministry of Education, and the European University Association. EURODOC plays a role in that we will organize the participation of around 35-40 doctoral candidates from the Bologna signatory countries (see map: http://www.bologna-bergen2005.no/EN/BASIC/Map.htm ). CONTENT - This conference is on the road map of the Bologna Process from Berlin to Bergen. At the last Conference of European Ministers responsible for Higher Education in Berlin (http://www.bologna-berlin2003.de, September 2003) it was agreed that the Doctoral level shall be included as the third level of the Bologna Process, which is the open rocess of harmonisation of Higher Education systems in Europe (http://www.bologna-bergen2005.no/ ). Until now, practically there have been no meetings organised by ministries dealing exclusively with the doctoral programmes, and this "Bologna Seminar" in Salzburg is expected to propose recommendations to be presented at the next Ministers' Conference in Bergen (May 2005). Preliminary and general information on the Conference is available at http://www.eurodoc.net/activities/salzburg2005/index.php . REPRESENTATIVES OF DOCTORAL CANDIDATES - According to the "Salzburg project", we are selecting one representative per Bologna signatory country. Due to the nature of the event, it is expected that the representative will be a doctoral candidate having a good knowledge of the situation of doctoral programmes and of doctoral candidates' conditions in his/her country. The member associations of EURODOC will appoint their delegate according to their rules. For countries where there isn't any association member of EURODOC, the EURODOC Board will select representatives on the basis of the applications received, which should enclose a letter of motivation explaining their capability to represent doctoral candidates of that country. All the representatives will be hosted by EURODOC (accomodation and lunches) from the evening of the 3rd to the afternoon of the 5th of february (possible extensions due to travel needs), and the travel expenses will be reimbursed as soon as funding becomes available [*]. All the applicants must be registered according to form in the web site: http://www.eurodoc.net/activities/salzburg2005/registration_form .php. The representatives will be requested to fill in a "countryquestionnaire" through the web site http://www.eurodoc.net/activities/salzburg2005/questionnaire.php Should you have any questions, feel free to contact us at: board@eurodoc.net or salzburg@eurodoc.net Looking forward to hearing from you, we remain Sincerely Yours, Renzo Rubele (President of EURODOC) Christian M. Let's participate?!, Berlin-Wroclaw, 05th-18th March 2005 CALL FOR APPLICATION We are the future! Let's participate?! Multilateral youth project from BOSPORUS INTERNATIONAL Wandlitz, Berlin and Wroclaw 05th - 18th March 2005 Organization: Bosporus International Network, www.bosporus.org Participants: Bulgaria, Germany, Poland, Romania, Sweden and Turkey APPLICATION DEADLINE: 07.02.2005 Description / Aims: Historically the demand for participation is justified on the basis of human rights, rights of self-determination and human dignity. Hence, the concept pf participation seems to be defined. But what does participation actually means today to us? What is participation and what isn't? Are there any requirements to participate? Besides trying to find answers to these questions the project focuses on the problem how young people from all over Europe can participate in political decisions in their local environment. In general the possibilities for participation are wide spread, including membership in sports or cultural organizations, volunteer work for aid agencies or being a member of a political party. Thus active political participation decreased a lot within the last years. Young people are accused not to be interested in the political processes and decisions but only to be interested in their own advantages and "fun". Therefore, the following main questions should be discussed during the project: - What is political participation and what are the advantages of it? - Which differences and similarities do exist between the European countries within structures of political participation? Which role does history play according to this? - How can we regain youth's confidence in politics and politicians? - Do youth only participate if the "fun-factor" is very high and the "cost" is possibly low? The answers to these and many other questions as well as discussions between young people with different social, local and cultural background are going to look closely at the European culture with its diversities and the way this culture participated in the forming of the European society nowadays. The program: In general the project consists on two parts: a theoretical and a practical part, which are combined in the different activities. Although, the focus will be a more practical one, in the beginning there will be a more theoretical part where the use of presentations, interviews, portraits, role games, discussions in small groups should sensitize the participates on the issues linked to our general topic. After this Start-up Seminar the new knowledge should be backed and enlarged through direct experience. Working groups, workshops and meetings as well as discussions with representatives from different institutions, organizations and initiatives in Berlin and Wroclaw should show the practical point of participation and enable the participants to exchange their own point of views and experiences. The program consists on the following activities: - Start-up-Seminar: presentations and working groups in Wandlitz (3 days) - Workshops, meetings, round-table discussions, working groups and culture in Berlin (4 days) - Workshops, meetings, excursion and working groups in Wroclaw (3 days) - presentation of the working groups, final discussion and evaluation in Berlin (2 days) - Cultural activities in Berlin and Wroclaw Criteria for participation: YOU are not older than 25 years YOU are able to communicate in English YOU are willing to: - prepare and present a paper during the start-up seminar - actively participate in the project activities - prepare an experience letter at the end of the program Participation fee: The participation fee depends on your place of living. The workshop is intended for university teachers and/or professionals teaching (part-time) in the Social Sciences and Humanities who would like to revise or develop courses on corruption. It will take place at the Central European University, Budapest. The event will take place as part of CRC's 'Topical Issues in Curriculum Development' series. For selected participants from Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union or Mongolia all costs related to travel and accommodation during the sessions will be covered by the CRC. Participants from outside the region are also welcome on a self-financing basis. There is new international concern with the old problem of corruption, and new demand for teaching and training people involved in controlling it. Economic approaches to understanding corruption have become influential in international organizations. Other social science disciplines frame the problem of corruption in different ways. What counts as 'corruption', and approaches to dealing with it, also depend on particular historical, regional and national contexts? The workshop will consider issues of audience, curriculum, teaching materials and methods, assessment, accreditation, funding and the alignment of teaching and research. Critical use will be made of the internet resources now available on the subject of corruption. Material from the workshop will be posted on a website for use by participants afterwards. Team-taught by international faculty with long-standing experience in teaching and researching the subject, the workshop will adopt a deliberately cross disciplinary approach to understanding corruption, and attempts to control it. The organizers would like to attract participants from different disciplinary backgrounds (law, economics, sociology, political science etc) and people involved in professional training as well as university education. The workshop will also consider how academic curricula can be adapted to training needs of government officials, or activists, and at how anti-corruption agencies and activists may contribute to the design, delivery or funding of courses. The main regional and historical focus will be on post communist Eastern Europe, but the workshop will adopt a strongly comparative approach, and participants from outside this region would be welcome.
