The French baccalaureate is a school-leaving examination as well as an entry examination providing admission to higher education.
The French cultural tradition focuses on "culture générale" (general knowledge. The number of subjects in the French baccalauréat is comparatively high, with a minimum of 9 subjects in the written examinations. Each subject requires a general knowledge of the topic. Moreover; the level of specialization about each topic is generally limited, with the exception of some specialties of the technological and vocational baccalauréats. Every type of baccalauréat (general, technological, vocational) and every specialty (S, ES, L ...) operates indistinctly as entrance examination to higher education in all French universities. Moreover, the absence of numerus clausus is the rule so far as the universities are concerned. Nevertheless, in the first two years after the baccalauréat, about 20% of the bacheliers enter, with a numerus clausus, the "classes préparatoires" which lead to the renown and highly selective "grandes écoles".
